In this Unit, we built upon existing work from an earlier unit by adapting and transforming existing garages into a new interior space for our partner, using an adjoining courtyard situated behind our University campus, enabling the space to open outward and host community gathering (a programme which loosely nods to the public square as a typology of community life). Our partners were our primary focus and are now imagined to be relocated into these garages. The garages are leftover pockets of urban space located at the edge of the estate, in Camberwell, and positioned close to the central green of the estate. Through adaptive reuse, our intervention explored how this small, intimate setting — combining interior and exterior conditions — can become a destination for the community, transforming a space of neglect into a place of gathering and pause.
